Getting paneled with insurance as a therapist
If you're an LCSW, LPC, LMFT, or psychologist going into private practice, insurance panels are how most clients will find and afford you. Getting on them is a paperwork marathon: a complete CAQH profile, individual applications to each payer, and 90–120 days of waiting per panel.
The sequence that works
First, your NPI and any state prerequisites. Second, a bulletproof CAQH profile — full five-year work history with month/year dates, license, malpractice certificate, W-9 — because nearly every commercial payer pulls from it. Third, choose panels strategically: the dominant regional plans plus Medicaid managed-care organizations where behavioral health demand is strongest. Fourth, submit everything at once so the clocks run in parallel, then follow up relentlessly.
Common mistakes
Letting CAQH lapse un-attested, submitting with work-history gaps unexplained, applying to one panel at a time, and assuming silence means progress. Panels close, files expire, and nobody calls you — follow-up is the whole game.
